"God Bless You"
It was getting dark and clearly, my driver had forgotten that he was supposed to pick me up, despite having reminded him multiple times. Having no other option left, I called up my mother and she asked me to catch an auto myself and return home without waiting for him to show up.
I started walking down the dark alley, where the street lights flickered and where strangers would mock me for tripping every five seconds. Gosh, how I hated the darkness. "Just a bit more, then I'll reach the road", I kept motivating myself, and after five minutes of walking and being chased by a family of monkeys, I reached the road and tried signaling to every vacant auto that passed me. My mother kept calling me to ask whether I had managed to catch an auto but I had no other answer except a blatant 'no'.
I failed to notice a desperate lady standing on the footpath of the same road.
She walked up straight to me, and asked in amazingly fluent English, "Are you crossing the road?". I absentmindedly replied "No" and walked away from her, still trying to catch an auto and get home. Suddenly, I felt a firm yet gentle grip on my forearm and a helpless whisper pierced my ear, "Please help me cross the road, I have been stuck here for a very long time." Before I could protest against her grip on my arm, as I hate physical contact, she pushed me onto the middle of the road.
Panic wrapped it's treacherous limbs around my mind as a huge SUV came speeding towards my way. Impulsively, I pulled the lady and darted towards another direction. I kept dodging other cars and within some time, we had crossed the road. I missed two prospective autos which were going towards the direction of my house and was cursing furiously under my breath.
Once we had crossed he road, the grip on my elbow loosened and a fragile voice said,"God bless you."
I saw the outline of the old woman disappear into the twilight with a smile on her face as I sat in an auto and headed home.
