Worth
I was walking with a friend yesterday and our topic of discussion was about the all rounder in her class. She was telling me about her various antics and how she always stole the limelight from others by her ideas which were far sighted into the future. I was listening to her in rapt attention when suddenly, her voice dropped to barely a whisper and she murmured to me, " I am jealous of her. People like her make me feel so talentless and worthless."
I was startled by this confession. I don't know what surged through my blood - anger or pity. I could not believe that my friend had something like this to say. Well, she isn't the only one who I've met who bases their worth in life by the checking whether they have the commonly found talents in people around them. But why is the situation so? We come across so many motivational posts and speeches and campaigns but why are we still so tied back by our own chains of low self esteem?
No, don't lie to yourself. You know that you have compared yourself to someone else at some point in life but are not admitting it. While some of us are vocal about our insecurities, most of us choose to be silent about what holds us back. Yes, you might not be as good looking as that girl you see on the posters or as academically inclined as your aunt's children. You might not be as athletic as your neighbour's son or an amazing dancer like your sister.
But that's the thing.
You're you. While it's no unknown fact that many people share the same name, it necessarily does not imply that you are like them, let it be in good or bad ways. No one has the same mixture of good and bad qualities in the same way or same proportions as you do. There will always be people who excel in some field in life but that does not give you any right to degrade yourself.
Pssst. Want to know a secret?
Your actual worth is not based on your achievements which can be identified by others. It's based on you and the way you choose to be your original self, not replicable.
